In 1968 Barrie started flying free flight model aircraft from the Keil Kraft Eze-built range, through the next 5 years he progressed to flying control line models and in 1976 he first flew radio control models. His model club was very active in RC pylon racing and in 1978 he got drawn into this form of competition modelling. Barrie first flew at International level in 1985 at the inaugural F3D World Championship held at Chicopee AFB (Mass. USA) and served on the F3 Pylon sub-committee in the late 1980’s when the FAI was still based in Paris.
In the 21st century he became involved in the formation of the rules and regulations for the F3R (Q500 style) and F3T (Q40 style) pylon race models, from 2013 he has served as the F3T Approval committee Chairman and since 2021 he has been the F3 Pylon sub committee Chairman at the FAI/CIAM
